Will The End Come?

Author: mshield

Thursday, 09 October, 2008 - 16:33

Ok so I am doing better than expected…

Well its 4:00pm on a Thursday afternoon, I have just come home from Uni and I am at my pc writing another blog post. I surprise myself sometimes. Ok, so, on Tuesday night I had a small fret about what I was going to write for the first post. Well it is nothing compared to what I am going to say for the second, follow up post. Again I am at a complete loss for what to write, or put up…

Bah, I’ll worry about what I’m going to write on this post later, for the moment I feel I should update the look of this theme slightly. I love to mess around with things. I am never happy with the “default” settings. I will open up the hood and ave a poke around, pulling at this and changing the odd setting. I find it’s the best way to learn, especially when it causes a big problem that I then have to work out how to put it back again. So I have changed the theme and I have dived into the various files to see what images I can change. I have already swapped the background for something a little more simple and effective; I just have to change the banner now.

Like an engine, I have to warm up. My source of inspiration doesn’t flood out of a tap that I can turn on and off at will. It would be nice if it could happen that way, but alas, I’m not geared up like that. So time to open up Firefox and have a hunt around on Google for a source of inspiration. Something related to interactive media production would be a good start. Once I have found a source of this magical inspiration I will open up Photoshop and do some more poking and messing about.

I did learn a few things at Uni today though. I have been using Photoshop since version 7. I was given a 20 hour tutorial on DVD for it, with all sorts of helpful tips on how to get started, and like a sponge I absorbed it and used it. From then on I have self-taught myself Photoshop with the odd help from various web tutorials. It is amazing that you sometimes forget the basics. Today, I had re-learnt about the spot healing brush, the healing brush and the patch tool. I must admit, I have not used those tools in a couple of years and I have completely forgotten how useful they are for removing blemishes etc. So all in all, it hasn’t been a complete waste of a day. Let’s just hope that I do not waste this evening away.

I will put up the composite images we did in the workshop for all to see. Let me correct that, for all that can be bothered to read the second post and haven’t gone off to find something better to do with your spare time. For those of you that are still with me, thank you…

Ok, so here are the four images that we were given to put into a composite. We were basically creating some sort of perfume for some fancy french perfumery. So in a nutshell, I extracted the crouching female and put her in a furnace with lots of pretty looking flames. I then superimposed a computer chip into the flames (a bit of technology with nature theme there, connected to the course theme). Yadda yadda *insert lots of technical mumbo jumbo about how you did it here* I dont wish to bore the people who have made it this far without clicking on the “close” button. So here is the final image:

OK so not a bad attempt at a composite. It could have been a lot worse. So that’s what we did for most of the time in the workshop, then for the last half an hour or so, we did a slightly different composite, keeping the female and flames but going for a slightly different effect, using white instead of black for a background. Then using a little bit of a splatter brush, I threw some fiery leaves across the background. Yea Matthew enough blab and show the picture already:

So yea, there you have it. A fairly successful day, learnt a few things, and to top it all off, I have managed to fill a second post within a week! Shock horror! I think I’m going to go celebrate, by cooking dinner… whoopee :/ …

to all the lovley people reading my blog,.. i’m sorry its been so long, I kinda forgot about it,.. im quite bad like that, have never been great at writing things down. More of a visual person, but any who its been a while. Alot has gone down since i last blogged myself. SO we had a one day project a few weeks ago,..which was cool, I enjoyed working in groups even though they can sometimes be quite testing..> but this was all good,. here is the result of that 24hr project on branding>

24hr project on branding,..

i hope that link works.

So, since that lesson i’ve been developing ideas for images in my visual diary,.. and out off all the inspiration and ideas ive put together,.. the theme for my images has really emerged….

and that is how we as humans use technology within nature for enjoyment.

since then I’ve spent a lot of time putting the images together in my visual diary.

after that i put alot of time into building my website as i thought that this was likely to give me to most problems, so i started early, and thats now finished and ready for the addition of my images.

udoku: delta release

Author: abarkersnook

Saturday, 10 November, 2007 - 06:14

By now a lot of you will surely have observed the progress I’ve made on udoku. However, I have not been able to demonstrate a working user interface, and would prefer not to explore the fundamentals of the administration panel. Although I have developed, to my knowledge, an impenetrable login system, I don’t want to risk exposing any bugs in the important backend controls of the site.

I am however pleased to announce the delta release of udoku, which now features actual user interactivity. Crucially, for an incomplete version of the website, you can now actually view content - and upload content as well! Registering on the site (which takes about ten seconds at most) will give you access to your user settings (email and that) and will enable the udoku grids for you so you can start adding your content.

Please note that users are by default not trusted until they have been verified by admin; so if you claim a udoku cell and upload an image via the demo grid I have set up, you won’t actually see it until I have verified the image. This may take a little while as I am actually yet to code the admin image-verification page, but don’t worry - once you have had an image verified, you become a ‘trusted’ user, unless the administrator (that’s me, by the way) removes your trusted privilege.

Also, you may only post one image per udoku; and if you make too many mistakes, you will be blocked from making any posts for a few hours. This is partly to combat spam, but also partly to give every user a chance to have a go at udoku without a small collection of obsessive parties getting there first. At least, that’s what I’m hoping for; the Internet demographic is indeterminate, so it may not all go to plan!

You can go directly to udoku by clicking this link.

Note: I am aware that the popover window doesn’t display properly in IE and also that the menu’s vertical margins go crazy. I will work on fixing these display bugs after I’ve done the rest of the backend. For the time being, use a proper browser like Firefox or Opera. (Or, if you’re on a Mac, Camino. Blatantly the best browser.)

Once more, I will respond to any comments or questions you may have for me. My previous blog entries received no responses, which while liberating - as I didn’t have to tend to my blog - was a slight let down as there are three year groups plus tutors reading this. I like to feel popular, even if only on the interbutts. Leave me some comments, you bastards.

udoku is still very much a work in progress as the primary functionality of the site - that is, image uploading - is still under construction. A friend of mine is assisting me with the site by coding an AJAX image manipulator, so I am currently putting time into the admin panel while I wait for his input.

The online version of udoku.org is an early beta, with limited functionality, but you can sign up with a username and password now if you want to get in there early. The following links should help you access the site immediately:

I don’t know what interest this may hold to anyone, but it’s 5am (6am if you don’t count the extra hour we got tonight) (and actually now 7am as I’ve been writing for ages) and I’ve just finished writing some script that I intend to use in my project.

You may be able to tell from my previous blog post that the visual aspect of my project is based on the sudoku grid. This contains 81 squares, which can be evenly divided into groups of three, nine and twenty-seven. After much thought, I decided that the most effective way to handle these grids would be to simply use an 81-digit string to set the values for each cell of the udoku grid, starting from the top left, moving right, and then down each row. Using a simple regular expression and a for loop I can split this 81-digit string into an 81-row array.

one day project

Author: ahawkins

Thursday, 18 October, 2007 - 23:05

On Monday we were given a 24hour project.. the aim was to produce one image that illustrated one one the following words>> depth, revolution, encounter, journey and element. the theme throughout the image was to relate to nature and technology. I thought this would be a good exercise.. but looking back on what i produced i can see i went about it in completely the wrong way. instead of brainstorming some ideas and thinking about how i was going to represent one of these words i just jumped straight into an already complete image. Although the image did represent the word journey it wasn?t that clear or as effective as id like.

Mick made a really valid point which i felt summed up the way i went wrong?.>> and that is that because photoshop is such a vast program with endless possibilities it becomes very easy to get lost within the program, which then starts to control you or your image, rather than  you using it as a tool to produce the image you want? and i suppose it all comes down to planning. Of which i did none, and that?s why my image fell flat on its face compared to some of the others shown. Although I am glad I described my image to the rest of the group as it showed me where i went wrong and what i have to problems i have to address. I really enjoyed looking at other peoples work. it gave me a massive insight into other ways of thinking and different ideas when it comes to designing in photoshop. Overall a very interesting exercise. Right, time to go bosh out some ideas in my journal.

Nature and Technology

Author: ahawkins

Thursday, 18 October, 2007 - 01:00

Since getting the brief for our first project over a week a ago my head has been constantly churning out ideas, only to be replaced by a new one a second later, Ive found that I’m having lots of ideas about concept but no real concrete ideas about my actually images.. or how i want them to look.

I’m really excited about the brief,.. nature and technology. there are so many different options when exploring this huge topic>> where can it go? what will my images represent? what do i want them to represent.? To start getting my head around my ideas I’ve been exploring the words NATURE and TECHNOLOGY in my visual diary… what they mean, represent, and how they are linked…

One of the first things that popped into my head when we where given this assignment was surfing.. I think about surfing a lot anyway, but i thought that it would be perfect as the underlying theme for my images,.. not surfing in particular,.. but how technology fits into nature. Nature is huge,.. some parts of nature can be controlled/managed such as grass or cattle whilst other parts are unfathomable in their power; tornadoes, volcanoes, waves…

Surfing in its simplest form is using mother nature for our own enjoyment. Somthing which has only been made possible thorough technology.

1 Day Assignment

Author: j1mp

Wednesday, 17 October, 2007 - 12:50

Right, so the other day we were set our first 1 day assignment. The brief was to create one image, with the overarching theme of nature and technology, illustrating one of 5 words:

Depth, Element, Revolution, Encounter or Journey.

At first I was pretty stuck with this and didnt know what to do, I found the 5 words fairly obscure, and couldnt think of a way to link both nature and technology to one of them. In the end though, I thought of an idea and went with it and I am pretty happy with the outcome:

 1 Day assignment

Ive used photoshop in the past, but mainly for very basic image editing like cropping, resizing, adjusting colours etc, so I was pleased with some of the effects I managed to make work with this one.

To be honest I dont think the assignment helped me that much with ideas for the Images unit, but it certainly began to help build my skills with photoshop, which I really want to improve in this unit.
