Highlights BA Major Projects 2006: Mute - VJ application

Mute is a free, open source, cross platform VJ application created by Gareth Jones for his Major Project on the BA (Hons) Interactive Media Production. In their final year, our BA students complete an independent Major Project as the central component of their degree.

Mute has received an outstanding response from tutors and interactive and music communities alike. Gareth is set for a bright future in Open Source software development.

Mute allows VJs to preview and project a mix of 3 different movies, animations, live satellite images and Flickr images and apply filters to each of the three source images projected. It also allows users to upload new movies and live feeds. Following Open Source principles, Gareth will soon be releasing an API to developers, allowing anyone to create new filters with only a small amount of code.

You will soon be able to download a version of the application from the Mute website, where you can now view a preview at www.mutevj.com

With high quality academic courses geared specifically to the needs of Interactive Media, we have a strong track-record of placements at top companies during undergraduate courses; and almost 80% of new graduates find a job within 6 months of leaving.

Some of our graduates have also had student entries in Computer Arts Magazine, May 2005.

In Sept 2004, Digital Creative Arts Magazine honoured us with a double-page spread about the BA (Hons) Interactive Media Production and our London degree show exhibition.

We were also amongst the Top Ten "Graduate Showcase" for Digital and Media Arts in another double-page spread in Computer Arts Magazine, May 2004.

Mats Staugaard, a student on the MA Interactive Media programme, has produced a web 2.0 style tool which allows you to easily find album art for your digital music collection - albumart.org. Albumart.org has been getting great feedback on digg.com.

This cool tool uses the publicly available Amazon API, which makes it a great example of new mashup technologies which do things users want them to do :)

Mats is looking for anyone who can help with translation to other languages - if you have time, help out.
